Test scores no longer measure only a student's progress. Scores also give parents a way to compare their children's school to other schools, and a way for prospective home buyers to compare neighborhoods.
This week, a publishing company put on its Web site rankings for the top 75 elementary schools and all middle school and high schools in Alameda County. The rankings -- including Fremont, Union City and Newark schools -- are based on the number of students at each school who scored above the state average.
Realtors use Stanford 9 scores to give buyers a flavor for the neighborhoods they consider. Steve Dhillon, who works for Property Professionals in Fremont, said test scores have a definite influence on where people decide to live.
"School rankings -- especially elementary schools -- are at the top of the list of questions from first-time homebuyers," Dhillon said. High test scores play a huge role in the attractiveness of Mission San Jose homes, he added.
Dhillon uses School Wise Press to obtain test scores, rankings and other details about schools in Fremont and Union City. On a Web site he is building for his business, he said, he is considering including a link to School Wise Press.
According to the School Wise Press rankings posted this week, 18 elementary schools in Fremont, three in Newark and two in New Haven made the list of the top 75 elementary schools in math in the county. In reading, Fremont had 20 schools, Newark had two and New Haven had one among the top 75.
There are 209 elementary schools in Alameda County.
Weibel Elementary in Fremont ranked first in math and third in reading.
